You can buy Pi coin (PI) on a handful of crypto exchanges, as of 7 October 2026. Pi’s open network launched on 20 February 2025, and OKX, Gate, Bitget and MEXC opened PI trading the same morning. Kraken followed on 13 March 2026. The process is the same as buying any other altcoin: verify your identity, fund an account, find the PI market and place an order. The real work is in the details, because Pi is thinly traded, availability depends on where you live, and a lot of people are trying to separate Pi buyers from their money.
This guide takes you through it in order: what you are really buying, which routes exist, a seven-step walkthrough, how fees and order types work, and the safety checks we would run before sending a single dollar. Nothing here is financial advice. PI was trading around $0.083 on 7 October 2026, roughly 97% below its $2.99 peak of 26 February 2025, and it can fall further.
What “buying Pi” means in 2026
Two years ago the honest answer was “you can’t, not really”. Pi’s network was closed, and the only thing for sale on some platforms was a Pi IOU, a placeholder claim on tokens that might one day exist. That phase ended when the open network launched, and now real PI trades on exchanges with real deposits and withdrawals.
The label still matters, though, because some sites still use the old language. If a platform says “Pi IOU” or “Pi-iou”, ask exactly what you would receive and when. Our Pi IOU explainer covers the difference in detail. For now, remember the rule: you want a market called PI/USDT, PI/USD, PI/EUR or similar on a venue that supports deposits and withdrawals of PI on the Pi mainnet.
It also helps to know what buying is not. It is not the same as earning Pi in the Pi Network app, which needs KYC and migration before coins can move off the app (see Pi mainnet and KYC). If you already have a mined balance, you may want to sell, not buy; the how to sell Pi coin guide is for you.
Before you start, a quick reality check on what a purchase buys. Set the amount you plan to spend into the converter to see roughly how many PI it equals at the current quote.

Your three routes
Route 1: an exchange with real PI spot trading
This is the main route and the one most people should consider. Per CoinGecko’s ticker data on 7 October 2026, the biggest PI markets by 24-hour volume were OKX (PI/USDT of about $3.1 million, plus PI/EUR, PI/TRY and PI/USDC pairs), then Gate, Bitget and MEXC, with smaller pools elsewhere. Kraken lists PI/USD and PI/EUR but its volume was a small fraction of that. These figures are dated and change daily.
| Exchange | PI pairs | Live since | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| OKX | PI/USDT, PI/USDC, PI/EUR, PI/TRY | 20 Feb 2025 | Deepest PI/USDT volume of major venues on 7 Oct 2026. Not all products are available in all jurisdictions. A May 2026 report of US access is unverified on an OKX page. |
| Gate | PI/USDT | 20 Feb 2025 | States that users in some countries and regions cannot deposit or trade. Its notices say UK users are restricted. |
| Bitget | PI/USDT | 20 Feb 2025 | Listed in its Innovation zone. Card on-ramp exists, but current fees for PI are unverified. |
| MEXC | PI/USDT, PI/USDC, PI/USD1 | 20 Feb 2025 (deposits and withdrawals from 22 Feb) | Listed in its Innovation Zone. Reports of past withdrawal pauses come from aggregators only. |
| Kraken | PI/USD, PI/EUR | 13 Mar 2026 | Geographic restrictions may apply. Deposits need a memo with a standard address, or a muxed address with no memo. |
Reading that table, the choice mostly comes down to three things. If you want the most active market, OKX has led on PI/USDT volume. If you want to pay in dollars or euros without a stablecoin step, Kraken’s fiat pairs are the cleanest, though thin. If you live somewhere that blocks a given exchange, you will not find out by guessing, so check its announcement or support page first.
Some names are conspicuous by their absence. KuCoin’s own price page states PI is not officially listed. We found no PI market on Binance’s price page or any Coinbase statement, though we could not read Coinbase’s page directly. A Binance community vote in February 2025 was non-binding and has not led to a listing that we could find. BitMart and HTX have a messier history (a December 2025 BitMart notice shows deposits and withdrawals as “TBD”, and HTX delisted the old IOU token in February 2025), and neither showed up in CoinGecko’s active ticker list on 7 October 2026. The Pi coin listing page tracks the claims and the evidence. For a venue-by-venue comparison, see our exchanges page.

The table above shows live venue data. Read it as a map of where the volume is, not as a recommendation. A venue with a bigger number is easier to trade on, but it can still be unavailable to you.
Route 2: CEX.IO
CEX.IO is a long-running exchange (founded 2013) that sells PI through a card, bank transfer or e-wallet flow, which makes it appealing if you want to pay by card and skip the stablecoin step. On the credibility side, its US entity is registered with FinCEN as a money services business and holds state money-transmitter licences (NMLS ID 1804170). Its UK entity is on the FCA’s cryptoasset register for anti-money-laundering purposes (FRN 1007192), which is registration, not FCA authorisation, and the firm says so itself. Its Spanish entity has a MiCA application pending with the CNMV, with no authorisation yet.
Here is the catch you should know before paying. CEX.IO’s own buy page calls the asset “Pi IOU” and does not spell out settlement terms or whether real PI can be withdrawn, and we could not verify either point. So check what exactly you are buying, and the settlement terms on the page, before you pay. If it matters to you that the coins can reach your own wallet, ask support first. New customers also face limits (about $1,000 a day and $3,000 a month in the first three months after verification, per its limits page). For regulatory detail see its legal and security page. If that suits you, you can open an account and look at the Pi page yourself.
Route 3: peer-to-peer and off-platform deals
We do not recommend this, and here is why. Buying PI from a stranger on social media, in a Telegram group or in a DM means paying first and trusting a screenshot. Fake sellers, fake escrow, chargebacks and frozen bank accounts are the usual outcomes. A marketplace with a proper escrow on a regulated exchange is a different thing, but even there you take on counterparty and bank-account risk. If a seller pushes you to move off the platform, that is your answer. The legit page lists the scam patterns around Pi in more detail.
Step by step: buying PI on an exchange
-
Pick a platform. Choose a venue that lists PI spot in your country, with a visible announcement, a live PI market and a fee page. Type the address yourself or use a bookmark, never a link from a message or ad.
-
Create and verify your account. Sign up on the official site, turn on two-factor authentication, and complete identity verification. Expect to upload ID and a selfie. This can take minutes or days.
-
Fund the account. Deposit by bank transfer or card, or send a stablecoin from another wallet. Read the deposit fee and the minimum first, because a fixed fee takes a bigger bite out of a small purchase.
-
Find the real PI market. Search for PI and look at the pair (PI/USDT, PI/USD or PI/EUR). Look-alike tokens with names like “Pi Inu” exist, and they are not Pi Network’s PI. If you cannot find a pair, the platform may not support PI in your region.
-
Place your order. A limit order lets you set the price you are willing to pay. A market order fills immediately at whatever the order book offers, which on a thin market can be worse than the quote. For anything beyond a small purchase, check the depth first.
-
Check the result. Open your trade history and confirm the amount filled, the average price and the fee. Screenshot it for your records, which will also help with taxes.
-
Keep it or withdraw it. Leaving PI on the exchange is convenient for trading but means the exchange holds your keys. Withdrawing to a wallet gives you control, with the risk of a wrong network or missing memo. See the Pi wallet guide and our wallet comparison.
Most people stop at step 2 because verification takes longer than expected, and that is normal. Start it before you decide how much to buy, since you may not want to be waiting while the price moves.
Fees, spread and order types in plain English
We will not quote fee percentages, because they differ by venue, account tier and payment method, and we could not verify them for every platform. What matters is the structure. You can pay a deposit fee, a trading fee (often lower for limit orders), a card or conversion fee, and later a withdrawal fee. On top of that sits the spread, the gap between the best buy price and best sell price, which can be wide for Pi because trading is thin: CoinGecko reported only about $7.5 million of PI volume over 24 hours on 7 October 2026 against a $0.94 billion market cap.
A market order crosses the spread, so you pay the worse price immediately. A limit order lets you wait for a better one but may never fill. A good habit for a first purchase is a small limit order near the current price, then looking at how the order book moves before buying more. Buying in two or three smaller chunks spreads out the price risk and lets you see the real cost.
Fake exchange sites copy real logos and run ads that rank above the real thing. Open your chosen exchange by typing its address, check the padlock and the exact domain, and never enter a seed phrase or Pi passphrase anywhere. No legitimate exchange will ask for it.
Keep it or move it
After the order fills, you have a choice. An exchange balance is easy to sell, but it is custodial, which means the platform controls the keys. Moving PI to a wallet you control removes that dependency, but only if you do it right: use the Pi mainnet network, copy the full address, and include the memo if the receiving side asks for one, which Kraken does for standard deposit addresses. Send a small test first. A missing memo can delay or lose funds. The Pi wallet guide goes through transfers step by step.
Security checklist before you pay
- Use only exchanges you reached by typing the address, and confirm the PI announcement on the exchange’s own page.
- Check that the venue is registered where you live (for example the FinCEN or NMLS lookups in the US, the FCA register in the UK, ESMA’s MiCA hub in the EU).
- Turn on two-factor authentication and a withdrawal address allowlist.
- Never share your Pi passphrase or exchange password, and ignore anyone who offers to “help” you buy by DM.
- Pay with money you can afford to lose entirely.
- Keep a record of every purchase for tax reporting.
Pi itself says only KYB-verified exchanges and businesses are legitimate, and publishes a verified list. We could not read that list directly, so check it on minepi.com before trusting a platform that claims official Pi support.
Buying PI from the US, India and elsewhere
Where you live decides which doors open. In the US, Kraken lists PI/USD with geographic restrictions, and a May 2026 report says OKX opened PI access to US users, which we could only confirm through a third party; our Pi coin in the USA guide covers regulation and tax. In India, we could not verify a registered Indian exchange offering PI, so users usually rely on international venues and stablecoins, which carries tax and banking considerations; see the India guide. In the UK, check carefully, because Gate says UK users are restricted. In the EU, Kraken’s and OKX’s euro pairs avoid a stablecoin step, and MiCA gives you a register to check against.
If you are still deciding whether to buy at all, the Pi coin price page puts today’s number in context, and the price prediction page is a sober look at scenarios, not promises.
